Staying cool during extreme heat

How to keep cool

Here are some tips for staying cool during extreme heat:

  • Stay hydrated:  Drink water before you feel thirsty, especially if you're outside or exercising. Sweating helps your body cool down.
  • Keep cool:  Use air conditioning or a fan, and try to keep your skin wet. You can use a spray bottle, damp sponge, or take cool showers or baths. You can also try putting cold washcloths or ice packs on your neck or wrists. If you don't have air conditioning, you can try going to a public library or shopping mall.
  • Dress for the heat:  Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing made from breathable fabrics like cotton. Darker colors absorb heat faster.
  • Limit outdoor activities:  Avoid strenuous activities or working outside during the hottest parts of the day. If you're outside, try to find shade.
  • Keep your home cool:  Close your blinds and shades during the day to keep the sun out, and open your windows at night when it's cooler. You can also try sealing any cracks or holes around your windows and doors with weather stripping or caulk.

Be prepared for when the power goes out.

If you lost power, would you be able to keep cool?  Here is a link to a battery operated fan.  Keep cool even when you have no power.
